How-to
Preparing wood before staining: the complete guide
Why preparation matters
Preparation largely determines the end result. On well-prepared wood, stain adheres better and lasts longer.
New untreated wood
- Sand with 120 grit sandpaper
- Remove dust
- Let dry completely
- Apply base coat
Previously stained wood
- Clean the wood
- Lightly sand with 180 grit
- Remove dust
